Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) is scheduled to arrive at a final decision on the government's proposal to conduct parliamentary sessions from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at its parliamentary group meeting on Monday (17).
Parliamentary sessions are currently conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga has reportedly said that the UNP parliamentary group would meet only on Monday to discuss this proposal and arrive at a final decision.
Amaratunga has also said that the government had not responded positively to a UNP proposal that parliamentary proceedings be telecast live.
According to him, many other countries permit the live telecast of parliamentary proceedings.
"Media should be allowed to do it here. People have the right to know what their representatives are doing in parliament. However, the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) did not like our idea," Amaratunga said.
