Colombo: India has assured Sri Lanka that it will take action against the perpetrators who attacked the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi Friday (02).
Indian Minister for External Affairs S. M. Krishna has called Sri Lanka Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and told that immediate steps have been taken to strengthen security at the High Commission and that action will be taken against the perpetrators, a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said.
Following the incident when a group of protesters forcibly entered and caused some damage to the Sri Lanka HC premises in New Delhi, the Foreign Ministry Affairs and the High Commission in New Delhi made representations to the Indian Government, it said.
The Indian External Affairs Ministry has issued a statement deeply regretting the unfortunate incident follwing the attack.
Indian Minister has said that the "incident is contrary to the cooperative relationship that exists between the two countries and certainly does not reflect the close and warm bi-lateral friendship that exists between India and Sri Lanka."
A group of about 40-50 people have arrived at the main gate of the Sri Lankan mission and some have forcibly entered and vandalized the premises. Indian police say the people are Tamils extending support to Tamils in Sri Lanka.
