Sri Lanka Defense Ministry to take away automatic rifles from the prisons

Sri Lanka Ministry of Defense has informed the Ministry of Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation to hand over all the T-56 automatic rifles that are in the armories of the prisons.

Commandos called in to control Sri Lanka's riot-hit prison as death toll rises to 16

Sri Lankan authorities called in commandos to control the situation in the main Welikada Prison today following a gunfight broke out between the inmates and prison authorities during yesterday's riots at the prison killed at least 16 inmates.

Protest in Sri Lanka calling to free political prisoners

Families of missing and detained persons in Sri Lanka today staged a protest outside the Welikada Prison. A group calling Movement to Free Political Prisoners, comprising political parties and civil activists, organized the protest. Family members carrying placards with names and photographs of the missing and detained demonstrated outside the prison with representatives of opposition parties and trade unions.

3G phones recovered from the prison cells of the LTTE suspects in Sri Lanka

Prison officials of Sri Lanka's main Welikada Prison in Colombo have recovered two 3G mobile phones from the prison cells where the hardcore Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suspects were detained. Over 180 LTTE suspects detained in remand prison were moved to other prisons when the inmates at the Magazine remand prison launched a riot and set fire to the prison buildings. The LTTE suspects have failed to hide or take away the phones from their cells during the emergency and the prison officials inspecting the cells later recovered the phones.

Sri Lanka court orders report on prison attack

Sri Lanka's Colombo Magistrate's Court today ordered the police to submit a full inquiry report into the Sunday's attack on the police by the prison inmates at the high security Welikada Prison.
