He pointed out that a large number of art graduates enter the public service as a result of imbalance in science education and it is due to lack of facilities for science education in rural areas.
The President expressed these views when he addressed the public taking part in a function at St. Mary's College in Matugama of Kalutara District to distribute books and other school equipment to Grade 1 students in the district.

The books and equipment have been donated by the Transport Minister Kumara Welgama from his personal funds.
Highlighting that the facilities for science education are insufficient in villages the President pointed out that there was a time Hambantota district had only one school teaching science while Jaffna had 37.
He said that this error would be rectified with the establishment of Mahindodaya Laboratories at rural schools to offer equal opportunities in science education for the students in the villages also.
The President stressed that investments made in the current generation would bear fruit in the future and asked the parents to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their children.
The President expressed these views as he at St. Mary's College, Matugama after opening a swimming pool in the school.
The President also handed over three buses for the use of three major schools in Matugama and opened a swimming pool at the St. Mary's College.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, and Deputy Ministers Nirmala Kotelawala, and Rohitha Abeygunawardena also participated in the event.
