A coalition partner of the Sri Lankan government, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) says that the inclusion of Sinhala and Tamil verses in the national anthem would violate the country's Constitution.
The National Languages and Social Integration Ministry has proposed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa that Sinhala and Tamil verses be included in the national anthem when sung at state functions.
JHU Deputy General Secretary, Udaya Gammanpila has told the media that the Constitution has stated that the national anthem should be sung during national ceremonies only in the Sinhala language, which is the native language in Sri Lanka.
He has explained that the Sinhala language is original to Sri Lanka and that the national anthem at state functions should be sung only in Sinhala.
However, Gammanpila has added that the national anthem could be sung in Tamil during Tamil regional ceremonies and in the areas where the majority is Tamil.
