The Alliance of Media organizations, a media right organization in Sri Lanka held the 'Black January' protest today to commemorate slain journalists and protest the acts of media suppression.
Hundreds of journalists, right activists and members of opposition parties this afternoon held a protest rally at the Lipton Circus in Colombo and following the protest, a public meeting at the Public Library Auditorium.
The protesters holding placards and shouting slogans recalled the attacks on media personnel and institutions to denounce the deteriorating media freedom and democracy in the country.
The month of January has been labeled as a Black month for media freedom with the unusual number of attacks on media.
Killing of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunga took place on January 08, 2009 and Sirasa media institute was set on fire on January 06, 2008. The political cartoonist Prageeth Ekneligoda disappeared on January 24, 2010 just two days before presidential elections and an attack on Uthayan newspaper also took place in January.
