Deputy Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP), Sajith Premadasa says the country's constitution has been violated.
Premadasa has told the media that the country therefore is facing a constitutional crisis.
Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) that probed the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice had violated the Principles of Natural Justice since Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake was not given the opportunity to present her side during the proceedings, he has explained.
He has noted that the Chief Justice is not granted the rights given even to child abusers, molesters or any other criminal.
According to Premadasa, all accused persons should be given the opportunity and time to present a strong defence for themselves.
He has added that even international legal principles have been violated since the law permits both sides of the story to be heard, and the accused is innocent until proven guilty.
