Education Ministry to take over powers for appointing principals for Sri Lanka's national schools

Sri Lanka Ministry of Education has decided to take over the powers for appointing principals to around 300 national schools island wide. Currently, the Public Service Commission retains the powers to call interviews for the vacancies of principals in schools.
The Ministry of Education conducts the interviews and recommends a principal for the vacancy and Public Service Commission appoints the principal for the position. However, this system has caused violence in Vidyaloka College in Galle and Vishaka College in Bandarawela since the school community and parents preferred politically backed acting principals over the systematically appointed qualified principals. The Ministry of Education has therefore suspended calling applications for the appointment of principals for 92 government schools until the legal amendments are brought. However, the teachers' and principals' unions say that they will fight against the Education Ministry's move. -->
