Now, Mulayam showers praise on Akhilesh's govt

Five days after rapping his son Akhilesh Yadav's government for non-performance, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Saturday took a U-turn and got a resolution passed in party's meet appreciating the work done by Akhilesh in four-and-a-half-months after assuming power. He , however, reiterated that workers and leaders will have to follow discipline and deliver in order to make party perform better in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said
that a resolution was unanimously passed in the meeting that the work culture introduced by the SP government under Akhilesh's leadership is commendable. He said that the resolution also stated that the work done by the government after taking charge on March 15, 2012, is also worth appreciating. When reminded about Mulayam's warning to the SP government, Chaudhary said, "Netaji (Mulayam) was never angry with anyone and only wanted workers and leaders to reach out to people and improve their work further so that the party can win maximum number of seats in 2014 elections." A day after Mulayam's warning, son Akhilesh, when asked to react, told news persons that Netaji is party's supremo and has the right to pull up anybody in SP. He assured that the government will work hard to meet Netaji's expectations. There were also reports that Mulayam was dissatisfied particularly with a some ministers, who he felt were not performing upto the mark. Party sources also hinted at reshuffle in the state cabinet soon. On Friday, as per Mulayam's directions, it was decided that all the ministers, including chief minister, will reserve a day in a week to meet, hear and address grievances of workers and people. However, political analysts see Mulyam's somersault regarding performance of Akhilesh's government as a damage control exercise. After his warning to ministers on July 31 to 'perform or perish', the Opposition parties in the state had started publ on icising that senior Yadav had to intervene because of infighting among senior party leaders and because ministers were not listening to chief minister Akhilesh leading to lack of governance in the state. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders claimed that senior SP leaders have not been able to digest the leadership of Akhilesh, who is much younger and inexperienced to them. On July 31, Mulayam had also said that senior leaders of the party should stop airing their resentment in public. Though Mulayam did not name anybody, the warning was seen as a veiled threat to senior leader and minister Azam Khan who had publicly expressed anger a few days back after the charge of Meerut district was taken away from him by Akhilesh. The SP follows the practice of dividing district among ministers to supervise development work. Akhilesh was later forced to restore Meerut's charge to Azam. However, on July 31, Mulayam made it clear that he is still the SP boss and everyone will have to listen to Akhilesh. Earlier, Mulayam had given Akhilesh 100% marks on completion of his 100 days in office. However, he had also set a six months deadline to fulfill promises made during assembly elections. But he had to intervene before six months because things were not going as per the plan. Political analysts said that the 73-year-old veteran feels that the 2014 Lok Sabha polls could be his last opportunity to capture Delhi. As of now it appears that coalitions led by the Congress and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) will not get majority. The SP can play crucial role in government formation only if it wins maximum seats out of total 80 in UP.
