Sri Lanka main opposition in disarray ahead of PC elections

Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) campaign for the upcoming provincial council elections is in disarray due to internal disputes, party sources said.
UNP sources say that the party faction led by Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa has now been abandoned. According to sources, the disillusioned Sajith Group activists have complained that their reform activities have affected their future in the party, while their mentor, who was promoted in the party as a result of their efforts, is now acting as a loyal of the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe. Most of the activists of the Sajith Premadasa Group have now decided to keep a low profile, the sources say. Meanwhile, local media quoting two government politicians, Minister Felix Perera and Deputy Minister Chandrasiri Suriyarachchi, reported today that more UNP parliamentarians are to join the government in the next few weeks. Social services Minister Felix Perera participating at a meeting in Kandy Saturday has said that five opposition MPs opposed to the leadership of Wickremasinghe will be joining the government shortly. However, Kurunegala UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, whose name is mostly mentioned in this regard, refuted these claims today. Addressing media after paying courtesy calls to Buddhist chief prelates of Malwathu and Asgiriya chapters he dispelled the rumors that he is crossing over to the government.
