The working committee of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) will meet on July 05 to take the final decisions regarding polls for the Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provincial Councils, UNP sources say.
The party is accepting applications until July 04 from the candidates expecting to contest the elections. It will receive applications from prospective candidates until that date, sources said adding that the nomination committee appointed by the working committee of the UNP would take the final decision on July 05. According to UNP sources, the party has held talks with several retired military officers to field candidates for contesting the Provincial Council elections. Some of them are expected to contest as Chief Minister candidates. However, the final decisions regarding the Chief Minister candidates are to be taken at the working committee meeting held on July 05, sources say.
