A Sri Lankan court today ordered the authorities to send the former female political wing leader of the terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for rehabilitation. Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappulli today ordered Subramaniam Sivathai alias Thamalini, the women's leader of the LTTE political wing to be sent for rehabilitation.
The Criminal Investigation Department has met Thamalini on the orders of the Attorney General and during the meeting she has expressed desire to be rehabilitated. The Attorney General's Department in a report to the CID has said that they have no objection in sending the former LTTE leader for rehabilitation. Accordingly, the judge has ordered Thamalini to be sent to the Vavuniya-Poonthottam Open-Air Rehabilitation Camp for rehabilitation. Thamalini has been in remand custody since her arrest by a special police team on May 27, 2009 at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Vavuniya. She was charged with training LTTE cadres and establishing connections with LTTE members overseas. She joined the LTTE in 1991 and received battle training in a LTTE camp in Nirveli. She has been a combatant until the end of the war.
