Re-corrected results of Sri Lanka's controversial examination to be released today

Sri Lanka Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayaka told media Tuesday evening that the Advanced Level examination re-correction marks would be released shortly afterwards. The release of the re-corrected results was delayed until the judgment on the petitions against the university admission Z-score result was issued.
The judgment was delivered yesterday by the Supreme Court ordering University Grants Commission (UGC) to annul the current Z-score marks and re-calculate the score according to old and new syllabuses separately and re-issue. Supreme Court denied the request by the petitioners Ceylon Teachers' Union and the 16 students who sat for the A/Level exam in 2011 to annul the entire results of the 2011 GCE A/Level examination. Sri Lanka's Department of Examination Commissioner has received 147,000 applications for re-correction of results of the 2011 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination. The number of re-correction applications is close to 50 percent of the number of students sat for the examination. Meanwhile the UGC said it will clarify the Supreme Court's order on the Z- Scores since the formula to calculate Z-Scores for the results should be issued by the Examination Department although it has been given by the UGC. The UGC Chairman Prof. Gamini Samaranayake has emphasized that his institution is always ready to follow the guidelines given by the Supreme Court. A special discussion on how to recalculate Z-score marks in relation to last year's GCE Advanced Level examination is now taking place between the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission, the state-run radio SLBC reported. Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne says that the general public will be informed of the decisions.
