Tamil Nadu Chief Minister urges Indian PM to condemn Sri Lanka at UNHRC

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state of India J. Jayalalithaa Tuesday has sent a letter to India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him not to back Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council sessions currently underway in Geneva.
The Chief Minister in her letter has said that India's support to Sri Lanka to fend off a UN resolution to be brought by the United States and some European countries is "untenable". According to the Indian media to which Jayalalithaa's letter has been released, the Chief Minister has referred to an earlier letter sent to the PM dated February 29 requesting the PM to support the US-backed resolution. The CM, taking exception to India's stance against "country specific resolutions" and suggestion to take up discussions only under Universal Periodic Review as a routine matter at the UNHRC, said it means direct support to Sri Lanka. "This means direct support to the Sri Lankan Government, which is most unfortunate and untenable," she said, reiterating her earlier requests that India should support the US-backed resolution in the UNHRC and "strongly condemn the Sri Lankan Government". She has noted that the PM has not responded to her February 29 letter and said she is awaiting a positive response.
