Sri Lanka should implement LLRC recommendations and win support - opposition

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the government should implement the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and win the confidence of the international community. Senior UNP parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella told the press today that
the countries who have expressed support to Sri Lanka and those backing a resolution on the country have all called for the implementation of the LLRC recommendations. He said the resolution backed by the United States and other Western powers have recognized the LLRC's suggestions and entire world was seeking the implementation of them. He added that the current situation faced by the government was due to its own actions that have resulted in the international community losing faith in it. According to Kiriella, the government has also failed to implement the recommendations made by the LLRC in its interim report. The backers of the resolution to be tabled at the 19th session of United Nations Human Rights Council say it is an opportunity for the Sri Lankan government to describe how it plans to implement the LLRC recommendations.
