Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says the government is trying to generate revenue by resorting to swindling public funds and that the people were being burdened due to the government's failures.
JVP politburo member, K. D. Lalkantha has observed that
the people are being burdened due to bad economic policies and administration failures of the government. He has said the government has been unable to increase its revenue through the mega development projects launched by it and is now trying to earn revenue through fuels sales and swindling public funds. "The government has failed in the mega development projects launched so far. A port was built in Hambantota by taking loans, but there are no ship calling at the port. A power plant was built in Norochcholai with foreign loans, but the plant is always out of order and the CEB is incurring losses," he has charged. He has further noted that while failing to generate revenue, the government was engaged in wasting public funds in useless endeavors like Deyata Kirula, the industrial exhibition held to coincide with Independence Day celebrations. According to Lalkantha, the government has therefore utilized the farmers' pension scheme and the fishermen's pensions scheme to meet its expenses. "The government is trying to earn revenue through fuel sales and has therefore increased fuel prices," he has said.
