Representatives from various sectors of the society are to form a new center in Sri Lanka to build a broad national movement to fight 'imperialist interventions' in the country.
The movement, which is yet to be officially launched, will hold a seminar on Thursday (21) at the Public Library Auditorium at 3:30 p.m. The main theme of the seminar would be "How to defeat imperialist interventions in the country?" Speakers at the seminar would be Ven. Dambara Amila Thero of National Bhikku Front, K.D. Lalkantha of National Trade Union Center, Prof. Saroja Paulraj of Women for Rights and Dr. R.A. Chandrasena of Senaka Bibile Memorial Foundation. When inquired about the new movement, Lalkantha told ColomboPage there was a need for a broad national movement to defeat imperialist interventions in the country. He said that a discussion needs to be initiated about the matter and the seminar on Thursday is aimed at creating awareness about the matter. "Successive governments have in some way or the other opened the country's politics and economy for imperialist interventions at various levels at different times," he observed. Citing an example he said the during the period of the war, President Mahinda Rajapaksa had assured the Indian government that a solution based on power devolution and beyond would be provided to solve the ethnic issue. "The current administration, or the United National Party (UNP) or former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka cannot defeat the imperialist elements from interfering in Sri Lanka's affairs since they have all become pawns of the imperialist forces at some point," Lalkantha said.
