An ally of Sri Lanka's governing United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), says the United States is trying to spread its influence in the South Asian region.
JHU Secretary and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told the media that
the US was trying to back a resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions with the aim of spreading its influence in the region. Ranawaka explained that the South Asian region was important to the US both militarily and strategically. He noted that Sri Lankans should be aware of this situation and stand united against such threats. Ranawaka also charged that some European countries and the US have given asylum to war criminals wanted by Sri Lanka and were protecting them. He observed that these countries should first take action against the persons they have given asylum in their countries.
