Sri Lanka Marxist party determined to continue protest

Sri Lanka Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said it is determined to continue to protest and agitate until the government reduces the fuel prices and provide relief to the people. JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said
the party and its supporters could not be prevented from taking to the streets by the use of tear gas and water cannons. Sri Lanka police Wednesday fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse the JVP protest march in Maligawatte, Colombo. He said that the current Mahinda Rajapaksa administration has placed massive burdens on the people. "When the people ask for a reduction in fuel prices and ask for relief, the government increases bus fares and electricity tariffs," he claimed. JVP politburo member, K.D. Lalkantha said that the government was burdening the people due to its large scale corruption and wastage. He said the fuel prices have been increased by a massive margin like never before. "It is time to send this government home," he claimed. The government Sunday raised the fuel prices sharply in line with the rising global fuel prices. The Central Bank said the move is aimed at curtailing fuel consumption and encouraging energy conservation to reduce the trade deficit. The government has pledged to spend Rs. 2 billion a month to provide fuel subsidy to affected sectors such as the bus and rail service and fisheries.
