The Marxist party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe says communalism can be defeated only by stabilizing democracy, equality and providing equal opportunities to all.
He says that it was time to build a society that included all these opportunities.
Addressing a public gathering in Gampaha, Amarasinghe said that the gap between nationalities was created about 100 years ago and the capitalist leaders who ruled the country failed to bridge the gap.
He said that one could not be blamed for believing in separatism as such a policy existed in the environment they were brought up.
"However, now we should discuss whether it was right or wrong," he said.
Amarasinghe said that the JVP opposed communalism while other parties nourished the concept.
He pointed out that the JVP was the only political party to propose that all three languages, Sinhala, Tamil and English be made official languages.
"JVP was the only political party that proposed that all three languages should be made national languages in the country. We are not communalists. All other political parties are communalist. They can never accept this policy," Amarasinghe stressed.
