Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has said that it would ensure legal action against persons found guilty of robbing public funds and gambling with public funds.
Deputy Leader of the UNP, Karu Jayasuriya says that a series of recent events have awakened Sri Lankans to gross mismanagement and rampant corruption within nearly every branch of governance and to the political leadership's indifference to what is effectively national theft.
Referring to the importing of substandard fuel to the country, the oil hedging deal and the corruption at Sri Lanka Cricket, Jayasuriya says there was clear mismanagement and financial corruption in those instances and the perpetrators have gone unpunished.
He said the UNP will spare nothing to bring culpable politicians and public officials to book.
"We solemnly pledge to the people of this country, those who have been robbed and wronged by this government, that any individual that gambled with public funds will be prosecuted and held personally liable under a future UNP government," Jayasuriya says.
"Neither social status nor public rank nor dual citizenship will hinder the process by which they will be held accountable to the people of this country. They shall be brought to justice and their ill-gotten wealth will be confiscated," he adds.
According to Jayasuriya, this government will not listen to reason and it is therefore up to the UNP to exercise people's justice, even retroactively.
