Government to construct a housing scheme for Sri Lanka's resettled Muslims

Plans are afoot to construct a housing scheme for the Muslim community resettled in the North, the Sri Lankan government says.

A large number of Muslims, who had been displaced from the North decades ago due to the terrorist activities of the vanquished Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), are now being resettled in their original lands in the North.

Under the first stage of the project 42 housing units will be constructed in Nochchikulam in Mannar at a cost of US$ 231,000.

In response to a request made by the Industry & Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiyutheen, the Kuwaiti Joint Relief Committee has offered financial assistance for the housing scheme, the state-run radio reported.
