Sri Lanka President inaugurates 50th annual session of AALCO

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today inaugurated the 50th annual session of the Asia Africa Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo.
President Rajapaksa delivered the inaugural address following the welcome remarks by Justice Minister and the incoming president of the AALCO Rauff Hakeem. Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris delivered the Keynote Address.



Around 200 high level representatives of 47 member states are participating in the conference from June 27 - July 01 to deliberate on matters related to international law and justice.
In addition, many observer delegations and international organizations also participate in the event jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Ministries of Justice and the External Affairs.
The Law of the Sea, Trafficking of Women and Children, Migrant Workers and Protection of Children, and International Commercial Arbitration are some of the items that will be deliberated in depth at the conference.
Sri Lanka was a founder member of the AALCO established in 1956 and the 47- member organization provides a platform for member states to find common solutions in various fields of international law that would mutually benefit the member countries.
This is the fourth time that Sri Lanka is hosting an AALCO annual session and Sri Lanka is privileged to host the Golden Jubilee Session.
At the 50th sessions in Colombo the current President of AALCO, Celina Kombani, Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs of Tanzania will hand over the presidency to Sri Lanka Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem.
Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Suhada Gamlath, Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake and The President of the International Court of Justice Mr. Hisashi Owada also participated in the event.
