Verdict on Sri Lankan boxer to be delivered by Commonwealth court on May 08

The Commonwealth Sports Tribunal has summoned Sri Lankan boxer Manju Wanniarachchi before it on May 08 to probe the allegation against him regarding the use of illegal stimuli.

The verdict regarding his case is also expected to be delivered on the same day at the Commonwealth Games Federation Court when it meets in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to the Federation Court, Wanniarachchi, who won the Gold Medal in the 56kg weight division in Delhi, returned an adverse analytical finding from an anti-doping test conducted during last October's Commonwealth Games.

Wanniarachchi, 30, had tested positive for the steroid nandrolone.

His hearing before the Federation Court was scheduled for January this year, but his legal representative was unable to attend the hearing due to illness and trial was postponed until May 08.

Sri Lanka has imposed a temporary ban on Wanniarachchi, until the verdict of the Commonwealth Sports Tribunal is delivered.

Former Attorney General C.R. de Silva and Counsel Kalinga Indrathissa are to represent Wanniarachchi at Kuala Lumpur.

He is likely to face a two-year ban and lose his medal if he is found guilty.
