UK funds building 210 steel bridges in Sri Lanka

The United Kingdom has provided a loan of 6.2 billion rupees to fund building 210 steel bridges in Sri Lanka, the British High Commission (BHC) in Colombo said in a statement.

Cleveland Bridge UK Ltd, has won a contract to build the 210 permanent steel bridges in Sri Lanka in a project partly funded with a loan of £ 35 million from the Export Credits Guaranteed Department (ECGD) of the UK.

Sri Lanka Cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal made by the Minister of Economic Development, Basil Rajapaksa, for the project to improve access to villages, Ministry of Economic Development in Sri Lanka has said

The British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, John Rankin has said that the UK Government is pleased to help Sri Lanka in its rapid and long-term economic development.

"We are pleased that Sri Lanka has selected Cleveland Bridge UK, a reputed British company that has proven their engineering excellence globally" Rankin has remarked.

The project, to be completed by 2014, will install 210 steel bridges of 6-30 meter in lengths across the country.

"It is very satisfying to see the mutual benefit that Sri Lanka and the UK gain from trade partnerships such as that between Cleveland Bridge and the Government of Sri Lanka," the Head of the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) team in Sri Lanka, Janet Ford has said
