Sri Lankan Premier says over 6,000 former LTTE members rehabilitated

Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has informed parliament today that over 6,000 LTTE members had been handed over to their families after rehabilitation.

Speaking during the debate on the extension of emergency regulations in the parliament, Jayaratne has said that a few of the former LTTE members who were re-integrated into society have been arrested after receiving information about their alleged involvement in attempts to carry out terrorist activities.

According to Jayaratne, the government has completed the rehabilitation process up to 70 percent of former LTTE members and is hopeful of completing the rehabilitation of the remaining members by the end of this year.

He said that during the last few weeks 313 rehabilitated LTTE cadres have been released.

Meanwhile, the courts have ordered to rehabilitate another 100 former LTTE cadres held under detention orders.

The Prime Minister reiterated his claim that although the LTTE was completely eliminated in the country nearly two years ago its activities are being still carried out in the international arena.

The Premier said various international organizations and pro-LTTE groups are still trying to revive the LTTE in this country and to rejuvenate the Eelam concept.

Pointing out that emergency regulations are extended to prevent conspiracies against the country and to ensure a peaceful environment to the people, the Prime Minister said the emergency regulations in effect in the country do not affect the normal life of the people in any manner.
