Tension in Ahangama as Sri Lankan security forces fatally shoot two men

Tensions rose in the southern town of Ahangama after security forces fired at a motorcycle killing two people this evening.

The security forces opened fire at the motorcycle when the riders disobeyed the orders to stop at a checkpoint in Ahangama, DIG Southern Province Kingsley Ekanayaka has told the local media.

Residents of the southern town angered by the shooting have set fire to a police jeep and thrown stones at the policemen manning the checkpoint, the DIG said.

The police have tightened the security in the area and brought the situation under control, he said.

Karapitiya hospital sources have confirmed to local Ada Derana that one person had died and another is being treated due to the shooting.
