Cairn Lanka to set up school libraries in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's Presidential Secretariat and Cairn Lanka Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding Friday (11) at the Presidential Secretariat for the construction of 27 libraries in some of the least-advantaged schools in Moneragala District.


This Presidential Library Project is a concept of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to improve the reading habit among Sri Lankan children and thereby enable them to improve knowledge, skills, and good attitudes.


Secretary to the President, Lalith Weeratunga on behalf of the Presidential Secretariat, and David Ginger, Director, representing Cairn Lanka Ltd, were signatories to the MoU.
Cairn Lanka Ltd which is providing financial assistance has pledged Rs 24 million towards this project. Cairn Lanka will be funding the construction of the libraries and purchase of the required furniture and books.
The Department of Civil Security will construct the 27 libraries with technical assistance provided by the National Engineering Research and Development Center. Construction work on the first seven libraries is already in progress.
