Sri Lankan fishermen round up 106 fishermen from India, seize boats

Sri Lankan fishermen irked by the fishermen from India straying into their fishing territory rounded up the intruders in the high seas off the Jaffna coast and handed them over to the Sri Lankan police.

Sri Lankan fishermen on Wednesday had reportedly intercepted at least 106 Indian fishermen from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu state of India and seized 18 Indian trawlers.

The Indian fishermen have been escorted and handed over to Point Pedro police. They are to be produced in the Jaffna Magistrate Court today.

Reports say the Sri Lankan Navy had watched the high sea drama but did not intervene.

Indian consular general office in Jaffna is in touch with the Indian fishermen and Sri Lankan authorities to get the fishermen released, Hindustan Times reported.

Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) leaders have staged a protest outside the Sri Lankan High Commission in Chennai today against the detention of the Indian fishermen.
