The Sri Lankan government plans to amend the existing laws to make the possession of illegal firearms and explosives a non-bailable offence.
The decision to amend the law is aimed at disarming of persons carrying illegal arms to curtail crimes in the country.
The government says it plans to amend the Fire Arms Ordinance to restrict granting bail to criminals who possess illegal firearms and explosives during their arrests.
However, it will be a temporary measure until the government can achieve its objective of seizing all illegal arms.
Soon after the liberation of the East from terrorism the government gave a deadline to surrender illegal weapons. According to the government the measure was a success in the East.
