Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today called on the Police Department to keep in mind that their duty is for the people during the forthcoming local government elections.
UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told a press conference that the police have been taken under the government after doing away with the independent police commission following the passage of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.
He asked the police officers to uphold their pledges to the people and remember that they are not serving the politicians but the public.
According to Jayasuriya, the party has informed the Elections Commissioner of the transfer of several impartial police officers and other government officials.
