Loyalists upset with Elangovan's exclusion

Intra-party feuding has broken out in the Tamil Nadu Congress ahead of seat-sharing talks with the ruling DMK for the coming assembly elections. Followers of former Union minister E V K S Elangovan have planned to stage a hunger strike on Thursday at the Sathyamoorthy Bhavan, the state party headquarters, demanding his inclusion in the panel named by the AICC for the negotiations. Around 400 to 500 Elangovan loyalists would assemble for the protest, party sources said.

It is understood that Elangovan has been left out of the panel as he has been making outbursts against the DMK which has not gone down well with chief minister M Karunanidhi. DMK leaders feel that Elangovan's followers may not work whole-heartedly for the victory of DMK-Congress alliance. The panel comprises Union ministers P Chidambaram and G K Vasan, TNCC chief K V Thangkabalu, Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan and AICC secretary and Namakkal MLA K Jayakumar.

A Congress leader, requesting anonymity, disclosed that Elangovan followers are fearful that if he is not included in the panel, they will not be allotted tickets and their constituencies could be ceded to Congress nominees. If he is not named in the panel, Elangovan's political future would also come under a question mark, they contend. They said panel members including Chidambaram and Vasan are already demanding seats for their own followers which would shut the door on Elangovan camp.

If there is a pre-poll survey and it indicates that in Tamil Nadu there is strong possibility of a hung assembly, Elangovan followers reckon that their winning candidates will get ministerial berths. Recently Elangovan had said "If there is a hung assembly, we need ministerial berths," However, DMK is not interested to share the ministerial berths with alliance partners, they claim.

AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad, in-charge of party affairs in the state, and Union minister Vayalar Ravi are expected to finalise the number of seats with the DMK leadership after the recommendation by the panel.
