Trade unions in Sri Lanka's FTZs to propose amendments to existing labor laws

Several trade unions in Sri Lanka Free Trade Zones (FTZs) have said that they would propose amendments to the existing labor laws during a workshop organized by the Labor Ministry on February 1.

The trade unions have said the amendments will be proposed with the aim of safeguarding the workers rights of association.

General Secretary of the Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees Union (FTZGSEU), Anton Marcus has told the media that although there is an existing law to safeguard the workers right of association there were many loop holes in it and as a result workers have been victimized.

He has said that with the proposed amendments, rights of the workers, especially the right of association would be safeguarded.

It has been reported that there were many issues with forming trade unions and that the laws related to them were not being implemented properly.
