The Navy plans to provide training and instructions to athletes interested in water sports such as motor boating, jet skiing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing.
The Lagoon, located few miles south of Colombo in an area developed as an industrial and residential suburb, has been an industrial waste dump flooding the surroundings during rains as flood waters remain stagnant in the network of canals and drains connecting to the Lagoon.
Sri Lanka Navy in its efforts to clean up the canal system in the capital city has resurrected the lagoon and its waterways that had been neglected and degraded over the last two and a half decades.
The Navy carried out the project to restore the Lunawa Lagoon and the flood water drainage system in Colombo under the Greater Colombo Flood Control and Environmental Improvement Project (GCFC&EIP) with financial assistance from the Government of Japan.
It was an initiative of the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Cooperation (SLLRDC) of the Ministry of Housing and Plantation Infrastructure.
The newly dredged and cleaned lagoon has reportedly become a bird paradise now and is teeming with both local and migrant birds.
At present the Navy and SLLRDC jointly maintain the Lagoon and canals.
