Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday morning.
Earlier, addressing a function on Sunday evening, the Chief Minister explained why he could not meet Dr. Singh on his arrival at the Chennai airport. It was out of his sense of duty for Tamil and Tamil poetry that he did not go to the airport, said Mr. Karunanidhi, who was participating in a book launch function around the time the Prime Minister reached Chennai.
Recalling how kings in the past had respected Tamil poets, Mr. Karunanidhi, who released the book that contained 1,000 songs of Vairamuthu, said his decision was to honour the poet.
(Dr. Singh arrived in Chennai on Sunday evening to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress on Monday. He was received by Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan).
Sources in the Chief Minister's office said Mr. Karunanidhi had planned to call on the Prime Minister at the Raj Bhavan immediately after his arrival. But, he was held up at the function as about a dozen speakers spoke there. He was also suffering from a sore throat.
