Sri Lanka Election Commissioner declines recognizing 86 political parties

Sri Lanka Election Commissioner has rejected recognizing 86 new political parties. Read:  In TAMIL
These parties had applied for registration but failed to prove the conditions for registration expected by the Election Department, sources said.

Among the parties that failed to be recognized are the party led by former joint opposition Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka and another party led by former Tamil National Alliance MP M.K. Sivajilingam.

The Election Department had given time to correct the applications until January 17. However, the parties have failed to fulfill the necessary requirements.
