Pakistan and Sri Lanka governments need to enhance their cooperation in military and economic fronts and maintain a close relationship, visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez has said.
General Kayani has made these remarks when he called on Sri Lankan Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne at the PM's office today.
The Pakistani army commander who arrived in the island yesterday on a three-day visit at the invitation of his Sri Lankan counterpart Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya has observed that Sri Lanka has been able to successfully eliminate LTTE terrorism from its soil. He has expressed his confidence that Sri Lanka will similarly overcome the economic challenges.
General Kayani has stressed that strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations will help to overcome common issues.
Earlier in the morning the visiting Pakistani military official has also called on Sri Lanka's Army Chief at the Army Headquarters.
He was expected to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prof. G.L. Peiris but both of them are out of the country.
