Sri Lanka court further remands LTTE cadres

Sri Lanka's Colombo Magistrate Court today has ordered to further remand 55 former LTTE fighters suspected of committing serious crimes against the state during the war with the government.

The hardcore LTTE cadres have been in detention since their arrests in 2009 while hiding with the displaced civilians in welfare camps of Vavuniya.

The suspects have allegedly been involved in various crimes during the humanitarian operation last year and went into hiding among the IDPs in the camps.

The ex-fighters were under the custody of the Police Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) until they were produced in court last month and the magistrate ordered them to be remanded until January 03.

The TID has informed the court that they are still waiting for instructions from the Attorney General on further action regarding the suspects, the BBC reported.

The Colombo Magistrate has ordered them to be further remanded until January 17.
