ne person was killed and 27 others injured in Jallikattu (taming of bulls) event, held as part of the Pongal harvest festivities, in Palamedu area of Madurai district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
Despite stringent Supreme Court guidelines, the event turned fatal as one of the spectators was gored by a bull while the participants were trying to subdue it. The victim, identified as Bagya Raj, died while being taken to hospital.
Thousands of spectators had turned up to witness the bull taming event. Organisers claimed they had adhered to the guidelines issued by the apex court and all the 344 bulls and 50 tamers had been registered.
But there were violations of the SC norms when some participants pulled the tails of the animals.
While the death in the event indicates that the bulls and the tamers were not separated properly from the audience, the organisers claimed that no law was violated.
One of the organisers of the event, Bose, said, "The event was organised as per the rules, framed by the court. The bulls and the tamers had undergone medical check up and then only were allowed to perform in the event."
The focus now shifts to Alanganallur, where a Jallikattu event is scheduled on Monday.
