Sri Lanka rejects BBC report on LLRC being pro-LTTE

Sri Lanka today rejected a BBC report that said the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) appointed by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa is pro-LTTE.

Sri Lankan Ministry of External Affairs issuing a statement today rejected the BBC report dated December 24th, 2010 and titled "Sri Lanka War Panel 'pro-LTTE'" as an outright fabrication.
The BBC report citing the Chairman of the Patriotic National Movement (PNM) Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara said Sri Lanka's foreign minister has accused some members of the presidential panel investigating the war of being pro-Tamil Tigers.

BBC quoting Dr Amarasekara said that Foreign Minister Prof G. L .Peiris has advised him not to appear before the LLRC.

The Ministry in its statement said Dr. Amarasekera has however, issued a statement that very same day, confirming that there was no such conversation between himself and Minister Peiris, as claimed to have taken place by the news report.

The statement referred to a copy of Dr Amarasekara's statement along with an unofficial translation into English.

The BBC in its report has provided an audio link to the statement made by Dr Amarasekara.

The Ministry statement says that Minister Peiris categorically asserts that there was no such conversation between himself and Dr. Amarasekera.

"Indeed, Prof. Peiris has not had any conversation with Dr. Amarasekera within the last year," it said.

The statement says that the BBC report is a complete fabrication and the Ministry of External Affairs will be taking up the matter, the serious instance of a 'gross departure from the ethics of responsible reportage' with the British Foreign Office and the management of the BBC.
