Sri Lanka Power and Energy Ministry is to consider introducing solar energy to light street lamps in the country.
The Ministry has said that the project would help save billions of rupees that are being spent on lighting up street lamps.
According to Ministry statistics, there are almost 700,000 street lamps that are in use in urban and rural areas and Rs. 4 billion is annually spent to light up the street lamps.
The Ministry has further noted that Ceylon Electricity Board incurs a loss of Rs. 2.4 billion annually due to the unauthorized street lamps.
