The Sri Lankan government said the irrigation authorities have opened the sluice gates of all major reservoirs in the country to as they have reached the spill level due to the prevailing heavy rain across the country.
The government warned the people living near the major reservoirs to be vigilant of floods as the low-lying areas near the reservoirs may be submerged once the sluice gates are opened.
According to the Irrigation and Water Management Ministry the main reservoirs in the hill capital have reached the spill levels.
Polgolla, Kotmale, Victoria, Randenigala, Rantembe, in the hill country and other tanks such as Maduru Oya, Lunugamwehera, Dambullu Oya, Kalawewa have all reached the spill level and the sluice gates of these reservoirs have been opened.
The paddy lands irrigated by these tanks in some of these areas have been inundated, the Ministry said.
