Tamil Nadu fishermen society delegation to visit Sri Lanka

A delegation of representatives of fishermen societies in Raameasvaram and Tamil Nadu are expected to visit Sri Lanka shortly to conduct talks with the related authorities in Colombo on issues affecting the fishermen of both Tamil Nadu and Northern fishermen, fisheries society representatives in Jaffna said. Many decisions taken by both fishermen society representatives in the talks held in Tamil Nadu in August remain unexecuted due to non-cooperation by Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), the sources added.

The issue of Indian Navy continuing to attack Sri Lanka fishermen claiming that they have intruded into Indian marine territory was raised by the fishermen society delegation from North Sri Lanka in the August talks.

They had also requested the Indian Naval authorities to define clear boundaries in this regard.

The delegation from Tamil Nadu is coming to hold talks so as to expedite the decisions taken earlier.

The fishermen society representatives from Tamil Nadu are expected to visit Jaffna too to meet and hold talks with the fishermen societies in the North, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka minister Douglas Devananda is said to be keen in restarting fishing in the Northern seas by Indian fishing trawlers which had been stopped due to the efforts of the fisheries societies in the North.
