Sri Lanka's Chief Government Whip expresses need for measures to prevent future flooding of the parliament

Sri Lanka's Water Supply and Drainage Minister and Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena has expressed the need to take necessary measures to prevent the parliamentary complex from getting flooded in future.

Gunawardena had made this point after the first floor of the Sri Lankan parliament was inundated on Thursday (11) following torrential rains experienced from the previous day.
The floods in the House had caused damage to the electrical and information technology systems in the complex.

He has said there was a need for an additional lake next to the parliament complex for rain water retention in order to avert the danger of the House being flooded.

According to Gunawardena, such a lake in the landmass between the parliamentary complex and the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital had been proposed in the original master plan which converted Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte into the country's capital city.

Meanwhile, party leaders have also discussed flood prevention measures and have agreed to pay immediate attention to this matter.
