Sri Lankan government plans to grant jobs to unemployed graduates

The Sri Lankan government today said that it has successfully managed to bring down the unemployment rate in the country from 7.2 percent in 2005 to 5.8 percent in 2009.


President Mahinda Rajapaksa while presenting the 2011 budget said that 10,000 graduates will be given employment in the fields of engineering, planning, agriculture, and other sectors.

The President said that 1,500 graduate will be taken as management trainees to state banks and financial institutions.

He said that 1,500 nurses will also be enrolled to hospitals under the Defence Ministry.

The President said that through its economic policies, his government hopes to increase the per capita income of Sri Lanka to US$ 4,000 by year 2016.
