Sri Lanka trade union to meet tomorrow, decide on action to win Rs. 9000 salary increase

Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated National Trade Union Center (NTUC) today said its national steering committee will meet tomorrow to decide on plans to lobby for a Rs. 9000 salary increase.

The NTUC says the government will not grant the requested salary increase of Rs. 9000 in its 2011 budget, which will be presented to parliament tomorrow.

NTUC Convener Samantha Koralearachchi said the NTUC's national steering committee will meet tomorrow to decide on action to be taken to win the demand.

"The government will not be allowed to mislead the working masses by offering some small amount as an increment. Given the increase in the cost of living, the government must grant a salary increase of Rs. 9000," he said.

According to Koralearachchi, the NTUC together with other trade unions will plan to take massive trade union action to win the demand.

The 2011 budget has allocated Rs. 2,500 salary increase for the public sector.
