The Sri Lanka Prisons Department has decided to launch a Prison Police.
The Prison Police will be tasked to act in investigations within prison premises. Deputy Minister of Prison Reforms Vijith Vijayamuni Soyza said the main aim of establishing a police arm in the Prisons Department is to curb the drug menace in the prisons.
Recently, over 40 prison and police officials were injured as police launched a search operation in the Chapel section of Welikada prison. Prisoners attacked police and the police force was not sufficient to control them.
There has also been criticism from various quarters regarding the use of police within prisons.
