Sri Lanka to increase electricity tariff, provide relief to public places

Sri Lanka President in his budget speech proposed to increase the electricity tariff by 5% when the users exceed the limit of 90 units per month.

The President also proposed to reduce the electricity tariff of public places by 25%. This category includes schools, hospitals, religious places, and vocational training centers etc.

The decrease will provide relief to public places facing severe problems over electricity costs since the allocations are not sufficient to cover the expenses.

Most households that use modern electric equipment exceed 90 units per month. However, the low income group that uses less electricity will not face difficulty with the increase of electricity tariff, analysts say.
