Sri Lanka Navy will celebrate its 60th anniversary on 9th of December with a series of events, Sri Lanka Navy announced.
Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe said today at a press briefing held in Colombo that a series of programmes including religious ceremonies have been organised to mark the 60th anniversary.
A naval and marine exhibition will be organised at the Colombo Light House Naval base premises from the December 4th to the 12th. The exhibition is open for public from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
A conference on maritime security titled "Sustainable Support for Security and Safety at Sea" will be held on the 8th of December in Colombo with the participation of Navy Commanders and representatives of more than 20 countries.
The Navy band along with the Army and Air Force bands will perform at a cultural show in the Sugathadasa indoor stadium in the evening of the same day. An international sailing regatta will follow it at the sea off Galle Face Green in Colombo.
The main ceremony will be held on the 9th of December under the patronage of the President.
Six ships representing the navies of Russia, China, India, Bangladesh, and Singapore will call on the port of Colombo on December 7 to mark Sri Lanka Navy's 60th anniversary, Navy Commander Thisara Samarasinghe said.
A naval exhibition at the Colombo Light House premises from 04th to 12th December will be open to all foreign and local guests and to the public and will include demonstrations by Sri Lanka Navy Special Forces.
The Sri Lanka Navy started on December 9th 1950 and the first Navy Commander was Captain W.B.E. Banze. Since then 16 commanders have led the Sri Lanka Navy.
