Sri Lanka child authority to issue a special license to vehicles transporting school children

Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) is to issue a special license to vehicles transporting school children in order to prevent the abuse of children in school vans.

NCPA Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake said today that incidents of child abuse in school vans were on the rise and that the NCPA had recently arrested and produced before court a school van driver who had sexually abused a three-year old preschooler.

According to Dissanayake, the new license would ensure that school van drivers obtain a special police certificate containing their fingerprints.

In the event that school girls are being transported, a female adult is expected to be present in the van at all times along with the driver.
